Australian Antics

This year, Windward was fortunate enough to receive several exchange students. One of those students is known as Grace, whose full name is Grace Aroha Rukuwai. Grace is a transfer student from Australia. She gets to stay with us until February, but after that she has to leave us and return to Australia. During her time with us so far she’s been able to engage in a lot of new experiences. We teach different subjects than what Grace has learned in Australia, and our school is so much smaller, though that seems obvious. According to Grace, American accents are “pretty cool” and she also enjoys our food. Her favorite animal is a dolphin and her favorite food is pavlova; a cake-like dessert that comes from New Zealand that was actually named after a Russian ballerina.

Grace’s favorite part of Australia is the beach and the hot weather. We don’t have any tropical beach here in Washington. We do have beaches, but they’re grey sanded and sort of cold. She misses the sun from Australia a lot, we obviously don’t have much of that either. She also misses her friends and family. She has a younger brother named James, who is 14.

Hopefully Grace is having a nice time here at Windward and she has made friends and feels like part of the Windward family.
