Adventures in Anime Club

As some of you may know, Windward High School has an Anime club. It isn’t an official club yet, but we’re working on it! As for school rules, every club has to have an adult supervisor. Fortunately for anime club, our supervisor is Mr. Ritchie. We are lucky to be able to watch what we want to.

Of course, we’re still at school so we can’t watch things like Shingeki no Kyojin (Attack on Titan), but we have an abundance of other animes to watch in various different genres. The first few meetings of last year, we binged Studio Ghibli movies such as Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, and many more. One of the club’s favorites came around at the end of the year, Binan Koukou Chikyuu Bouei-bu Love (Cute High Earth Defence Club LOVE!), a hilarious parody to the Magical Girls genre. Another club favorite was Yowamushi Pedal, loved especially by Mr. Ritchie for its theme of bicycles.

It’s so much fun! A usual meeting goes like this: after school everyone has about 10-15 minutes where club members run over to Greens to grab snacks, then everyone assembles back in Mr. Ritchie’s room. Sometimes it takes a bit of time to figure out what to watch, but when we do, we turn off the lights and enjoy the show. Everyone laughs and has tons of fun. Sometimes Mr. Ritchie even gives us a crash course on Japanese, so if you’re in Japanese class, Anime Club is a great way to see the Japanese in use. If you’re interested, we meet from 2:15-4:00 on Fridays. We don’t have an activity bus, so you have to find a ride, but many people find it’s worth it. If you like anime, come by!
